Frequently Asked Questions about the New
Undergraduate Computer Science Degree Requirements

What are the primary changes in the degree requirements?

bulletUpper-level mathematics and physics courses have been removed, except for Math 3030
bulletCSc 2311 is no longer required
bulletCSc 3320 is now required
bulletStudents take three courses in their concentration and two strictly outside their concentration
bulletArea H now includes 12 credit hours of electives at the 2000–4000 level

What if I have already taken Math 2215?
Math 2215 can still count towards the 18 credit hours required for Area F.

What if I have already taken CSc 2311 or one of the upper-level math or physics classes that are currently required for Area G?
These classes can count towards the electives for Area H.

What if I have taken Math 2420 instead of CSc 2510?
You don't need to take CSc 2510 if you already have credit for Math 2420. We will submit a memo with your graduation audit to make the substitution. If you've already submitted your graduation audit, we can send the memo during your graduating semester.

What classes will count towards Area H?
The electives in Area H allow students to obtain a more interdisciplinary education. You can apply these hours toward a minor, but this isn't required. You may also take extra computer science courses if you like.

How do I change to my program to follow the new degree requirements?
You can fill out a change-of-catalog form during Fall Semester. We will provide a link to the form at a later date.
