New Minimum GPA requirement for 3000/4000 Computer Science courses
Beginning in the Spring semester of 2003, all 3000 and 4000 level computer science courses will require students to have an overall 2.30 grade point average (GPA) prior to enrollment. However, students who have already completed CSc 2010, 2310, 2311, 3210, and 3410, each with a C or better, will have the 2.30 minimum GPA requirement waived. For details of this new policy, click here. GSU Plays Host to Bioinformatics Symposium
DNA
On October 3 and 4, GSU hosted a research symposium named Applying Bioinformatics: From Genes to Systems. The event was sponsored by the University System of Georgia, which has held an annual research symposium at one of the state's research universities every year since 1991. The symposium had three focus areas: functional genomics, molecular structure, and models of cells and systems. Dr. Robert Harrison was a member of the symposium committee. He also presented a talk entitled "Efficient Algorithms for Molecular Modeling." (Posted 8/13/02; updated 10/18/02)

Harrison Featured in Georgia State Magazine
Dr. Robert Harrison and his wife, Dr. Irene Weber, were featured in the Winter 2002 issue of Georgia State Magazine, a quarterly publication distributed to more than 120,000 alumni, donors, and other friends of the university. The article, "Common Ground," discusses married couples who are both faculty members at GSU. Dr. Weber holds joint appointments in the Biology and Chemistry departments. (Posted 3/13/02)

GSU Team Chosen to Compete in Design Competition
A team of undergraduate computer science majors has been chosen to compete in the 2002 IEEE Computer Society's International Design Competition (CSIDC). This year's competition features the area of wireless communication. The GSU team consists of Dr. Michael Weeks (advisor), Marjorie Moss, Gene Oh, Alex Reznik, and Wun Yin. (Click here for pictures of the team.)
The team's project focuses on integrating Bluetooth wireless technology with a database. The application is an information-requesting scenario, where a person shopping in a store can use his or her PDA to locate items instead of relying on sales clerks. This team's efforts can be easily applied to any situation where two or more devices (such as cell phones and personal digital assistants) need to recognize one another and communicate automatically without a physical link between them.
The top 10 projects will be announced in late May. These teams will compete in the CSIDC World Finals in June to decide the winner of the competition. The top team prize is $15,000, with an additional $10,000 contributed to the winning team's school for scholarships, lab equipment, or travel funds. (Posted 3/5/02)

Zelikovsky Wins Best Paper Award
In January, Dr. Alex Zelikovsky won the Arun Kumar Choudhury Best Paper Award of the Joint Asia and South Pacific Design Automation Conference and International Conference on VLSI Design. The paper was titled "Floorplan Evaluation with Timing Driven Global Wireplanning, Pin Assignment and Buffer/Wire Sizing." The joint conference was held in Bangalore, India. (Posted 2/18/02)

Department Hires Lecturers
Ken Nguyen joined the department in January 2002 as a lecturer. Mr. Nguyen has two computer science degrees from GSU (B.S., 1999, and M.S., 2001). His specialty is database systems. Another lecturer, Louis Henry, arrived in August 2001. Mr. Henry received the M.S. degree in computer science from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. His interests include computer science education, database systems, and object-oriented programming. (Posted 1/7/02)
