Pre-requisites |
CSC3410 Data
Structures (implicit in this pre-requiste is the fact that
Discrete Mathematics, Math 2420, is also required); Programming experience in C/C++ and Java required.

Objectives |
This
course is intended to provide a general introduction to the field of
database systems. The course will cover the fundamental concepts and
principles, data models, query languages, database design,
concurrency control and some advanced topics.
Students will understand
the basic theoretical knowledge of database systems, be familiar
with oracle database and SQL, gain experience of designing and
developing database systems and database related applications.
Graduate students will also develop abilities of conducting research
in database area.

Policies |
Students
are responsible for all material presented in lecture. We will follow the text
generally, but non-text material may also be included in the lectures. Lecture
notes will be available from the course web page.
Exams will cover all the lectures and reading
materials from the text. Exams must be taken on the hour they are scheduled. They
will not be given early, and can be made up only if documented evidence of
medical emergency or death in the family is presented before the time of the
exam.
Late
Assignments: 50% penalty for 1 day late and
submission will not be
accepted after one day.
All work
submitted for grading must be the student's own work. Plagiarism will result in
a score of zero on the exam or assignment, and/or dismissal from the course.

Attendance
is vital to success in this class. While in class attendance will not directly
affect the grade, any handouts missed will be the sole responsibility of the
student. Spot
attendance checks will be performed.
Oct. 16 is the last
day to withdraw and possibly receive a 'W'. Nov. 17 is the last day
to withdraw to receive a 'WF'.
