Pre-requisites
CSC4710/6710 Database Systems (implicit in this pre-requiste is the fact that Discrete Mathematics, Math 2420, is also required).
Objectives This course is intended to provide a general introduction to advanced topics in database systems. The topics include Sorting, Transaction management, Concurrency control, Crash Recovery, Parallel and distributed databases, Information retrieval and XML data management, and Spatial databases. Students are also required to read some research papers, conduct survey on a particular topic, and work on a research-oriented project. Students will understand the basic theoretical knowledge of the above advanced topics, gain experience of designing and developing database systems and database related applications, and develop abilities of conducting research in database area.
Policies
  • Students are responsible for all material presented in lecture. We will follow the text generally, but non-text material may also be included in the lectures. Lecture notes will be available from the course web page.
  • Exams will cover all the lectures and reading materials from the text. Exams must be taken on the hour they are scheduled. They will not be given early, and can be made up only if documented evidence of medical emergency or death in the family is presented before the time of the exam.
  • Late Assignments: 50% penalty for 1 day late and submission will not be accepted after one day.
  • All work submitted for grading must be the student's own work. Plagiarism will result in a score of zero on the exam or assignment, and/or dismissal from the course.   • Attendance is vital to success in this class. While in class attendance will not directly affect the grade, any handouts missed will be the sole responsibility of the student. Spot attendance checks will be performed.
