While Virtual Reality attempts to synthesize most, if not all, aspects of a user’s experience, Augmented Reality (or AR) is a technology that superimposes virtual objects into the physical world. According to Azuma, an augmented reality system must 1) seamlessly combine virtual objects into the physical world, 2) work in real time and 3) be spatially registered in 3 dimensions. Though AR has been previously confined to university environments, recent advances in technology have enabled AR to come out of the lab and into mobile, medical, military and entertainment computing. This talk will provide some background in the field of AR by describing its history, current and future state and potential application domains. Further, it will provide an “under-the-hood” look at the technologies that support this area of research, and how to start building AR apps on a shoestring budget.

The primary mission of the GSU Student Chapter of the ACM is to provide a series of lectures, events, and field trips throughout the regular school year to promote the education and professional development of students as well as faculty members. The GSU ACM receives no student activity fees and relies solely upon annual membership dues to pay for these events and all associated costs. While we try to keep our events open to the general student body in order to service the GSU community and to promote awareness of our organization, we are unable to do so unless we maintain a sufficient number of dues paying members. If you attend (or plan to attend) any of our events, please consider joining us and contributing to our continued success. There are few burdens of membership yet many benefits, and the cost is only $10 per year.
