Ross Gagliano was born in Birmingham, Alabama on July 3, 1938 and received his BS degree from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1960. Commissioned as a Regular officer in the Army Signal Corps, he served tours of duty in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the continental US. Dr. Gagliano received a Master's degree in Physics from the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School in 1966, was promoted to the rank of Major in 1967, and served as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at West Point from 1968 to 1971. After resigning his commission, he received both the Masters degree and doctorate in Information and Computer Science, in 1973 and 1976 respectively, from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Dr. Gagliano joined the Georgia Tech Engineering Experiment Station (now the Georgia Tech Research Institute - GTRI) in 1975, was promoted to Senior Research Scientist in 1979, and served as the Head of the Operations Research Branch from 1977 to 1981. He held an IPA assignment with the U. S. Army Institute for Research in Management Information and Computer Sciences from 1981 to 1982. He was also a senior staff member on the Software Test and Evaluation Project for the Office of the Secretary of Defense (T&E) from 1983 to 1984.
Dr. Gagliano has authored or coauthored over 20 major technical reports, 6 chapters in books, and over 50 refereed journal articles and conference papers. He has made presentations at major national and international symposia, and chaired conference sessions devoted to AI, modeling, simulation, and cybernetics. He was the co-developer of a short course at Georgia Tech entitled "Modeling, Simulation and Gaming of Warfare." He served as the President of the 23rd Annual Simulation Symposium in Nashville, TN, part of the 1990 Eastern Simulation Multiconference.
At Georgia Tech, he taught a variety of courses, but primarily computer-aided modeling, from 1977 to 1985. Since joining Georgia State University in 1985, he has taught most of the graduate and undergraduate courses in the computer science program including discrete mathematics, data structures, computer architecture, and programming languages such as Ada, Pascal, and FORTRAN. His areas of specialization include modeling and simulation and software engineering. He is currently writing a book on a discrete element simulation methodology.
Dr. Gagliano has served as Project Director and Principal Investigator on many research projects, and in 1990 he jointly presented an NSF-sponsored workshop on Software Engineering for 4-year college faculty. His major research interests include software reusability, modeling methodologies, distributed control processes, and neural networks. He is a member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), the Computer Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Society for Computer Simulation (SCS).
