The Department of Computer Science at Georgia State University seeks an innovative department chair to lead the unit through an era of tremendous growth and to take the department to the next level of research foci and state-of-the-art degree programs. Georgia State is an innovative university with very high research activity. In response to rapid growth in student demand, high demand from industry partners, and increasing interdisciplinary sponsored research interest, the department is realigning its degree programs, strategic partnerships, and sponsored research areas. The successful candidate must be able to articulate a clear vision for the future of the unit that fulfills the university’s growing interdisciplinary research and grant funding, builds partnerships with the business community, and sets teaching objectives, while achieving its mission of student success. Areas of strategic focus for the department include data science and astro- and bio-informatics, machine learning, distributed and cloud computing, and security.

The Department of Computer Science is a critical hub for advancing the university’s strategic priorities, and it will continue to be a bridge-builder and leading unit on campus. The department currently has 23 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty, 6 full-time lecturers, 1783 undergraduate students, and nearly 200 M.S and Ph.D. students. The number of students has been growing at a rate of 10% per year. The department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science with concentrations in Security and Privacy, Bioinformatics, and Big Data and Machine Learning. In recent years, annual federal research awards have ranged from $1.5 to $2 million, and faculty have a broad range of research interests that include data visualization, cyber security, cloud computing, bioinformatics and computational biology, astro-informatics, big data, data science, artificial intelligence, robotic, sensors, Internet of Things, and high performance computing. The department has benefited greatly from the university’s well-established cluster hiring program, bringing to campus exciting areas of big data, machine learning, astro- and bio-informatics, and image analysis.  This recent growth is pushing the boundaries of interdisciplinary research and collaborations across campus, and it positions the Department well in a dynamic academic landscape that is creating further opportunities for innovation in both research and teaching.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral Degree in Computer Science or a related field,
  • Eligible for appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure,
  • At least five years’ leadership experience,
  • A commitment to undergraduate and graduate education as demonstrated through the application materials,
  • A commitment to diversity and engagement for the students and faculty as demonstrated through the application materials,
  • A strong research record that includes significant external funding, and
  • Effective communication and organization skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing academic curricula and/or active learning pedagogies
  • Experience aligning workforce/career needs with computer science education
  • Experience supporting and increasing research productivity and collaboration
  • Experience with industry partnerships and capacity to develop and maintain such connections.
